Вспоминается история, произошедшая в обуреваемой беспорядками России в начала XX века:

...Революционная молодежь, беснуясь в своем бунтарском угаре, закрыла как-то на Пасху верующих в храме и под улюлюканье толпы подожгла молящихся. Спасся только один мальчик – ему удалось вскарабкаться на колокольню. (Вряд ли он ударил тогда в набат, и сколько таких неуслышанных до сих пор в нашей стране набатов?) Спасенный смог уехать потом, спустя какое-то время, на Афон, где и рассказал подвижникам русского Святогорского Пантелеимонова монастыря, что ему было открыто, с тем чтобы они передали это откровение в Россию. Сквозь пламя в ту пасхальную ночь он увидел, как апостолы принимают души сгоревших заживо новомучеников. Апостол Петр повернулся к чудом спасшемуся и сказал:
– На Россию будет наложена епитимия в течение 70 лет.

Епитимия дается для исправления. Но исправился ли народ?..

Hieroschemamonk Valentin (Gurevich), spiritual father of the Moscow Donskoy Monastery

I recall a story that occurred in Russia, torn apart by unrest, in the early 20th century:

...Revolutionary youth, raging in their rebellious frenzy, locked the faithful in a church one Easter and, to the jeers of the crowd, set fire to the worshippers. Only one boy was saved—he managed to climb the bell tower. (It's unlikely he sounded the alarm, and how many such alarms are there in our country that remain unheard?) The boy was later able to leave for Mount Athos, where he told the ascetics of the Russian St. Panteleimon Monastery what had been revealed to him, so that they could convey this revelation to Russia. Through the flames that Easter night, he saw the apostles receiving the souls of the new martyrs who had been burned alive. Apostle Peter turned to the miraculously saved man and said:
"Russia will be subject to penance for 70 years."

Penance is given for correction. But have the people corrected themselves?

Отец Арсений Пещерник говорил: "Когда я молюсь по четкам стоя, то ощущаю сильное Божественное благоухание. А когда молюсь сидя, едва его чувствую".

Несмотря на свой девяностопятилетний возраст, старец непрестанно и ревностно подвизался, а также постоянно духовно обогащался, хотя у него и без того был уже накоплен большой духовный капитал.

Elder Paisios the Athonite.

Father Arsenios the Cave-dweller said: "When I pray with the praying beads standing, I sense a strong Divine fragrance. But when I pray sitting, I barely sense it."

Despite his ninety-five years of age, the elder labored incessantly and zealously, and also constantly enriched himself spiritually, although he had already accumulated a large spiritual capital.

«Мир движется к концу, и зла в нем будет чем дальше, тем больше», - не раз говорил отец Иларион своим ученикам. «По церковному преданию, есть четыре признака кончины мира. Первый: засохнет дуб Мамврийский. Второй: перестанет сходить благодатный огонь в Иерусалиме перед Пасхой. Третий: будет восстановлен Иерусалимский храм. Четвертый: Иверская икона Божией Матери – вратарница Афона – уйдет со Святой Горы». «Деточки, если бы вы знали, как близко то, что Господь определил к завершению мира, вы бы не жили сейчас суетой. Самое опасное, разорительное и вязкое состояние для духовной жизни – это суета. Она поглощает время и силы так нужные нам для спасения», - говорил старец тем, кто к нему обращался за советом.

From the life of Schema-Archimandrite Hilarion (Dzyubanin) (03/5/1924-10/21/2007)

“The world is moving towards the end, and there will be more and more evil in it,” Father Hilarion said more than once to his students. “According to church tradition, there are four signs of the end of the world.

First: the oak of Mamre will dry up.
Second: the Holy Fire will stop descending in Jerusalem before Easter.
Third: the Jerusalem Temple will be restored.
Fourth: The Iveron Icon of the Mother of God – the gate keeper of Athos – will leave the Holy Mountain.”

“Dear children, if you knew how close what the Lord has determined to the end of the world, you would not be living in bustling now. The most dangerous, ruinous and viscous state for spiritual life is bustling. It consumes the time and energy we need so much for salvation,” the elder said to those who turned to him for advice.

Из жизнеописания старца схиигумена Саввы (1898-1980)

У M. было два сына. Старший А. работал геологом. При переправе через реку на плотах он утонул, и восемь месяцев о нем не было известий. Не зная причины его молчания, мать поехала к старцам и многих обошла, и никто не мог ей сказать о сыне, но один из них посоветовал ей съездить в Псково-Печерский монастырь к старцу схиигумену Савве.
Когда она приехала в монастырь, отец Савва сам подошел к ней и спросил: «Вы кого ищете? Сына? Его нужно отпеть. Мы его отпоем, и он найдется. А тебя я беру к себе в духовные чада».- И добавил: «Ты за меня будешь молиться, а я за тебя».
Когда она возвратилась домой, ее ждала телеграмма, в которой сообщалось, что нашли тело ее утонувшего сына.
Проходит полгода, и молнией убивает другого сына. Потрясенная горем, М. едет в Печоры к отцу. Как и в первый раз, он сам подошел к ней. Она сказала, что лучше было бы ей самой умереть, чем ее детям. На это отец ответил: «Ты примешь монашество и будешь за них молиться. А если бы умерла ты, то они, не молясь за себя, и за тебя бы не молились».
Когда она стала монахиней, то во сне сыновья явились ей, благодарили ее и сказали: «Мама, мы в хорошем месте».

From the life of elder Savva (1898-1980)

M. had two sons. The eldest, A., worked as a geologist. While crossing the river on rafts, he drowned, and there was no news of him for eight months. Not knowing the reason for his silence, the mother went to the elders and went around many, and no one could tell her about her son, but one of them advised her to go to the Pskov-Pechersky Monastery to see the elder Schema-Hegumen Savva.

When she arrived at the monastery, Father Savva himself approached her and asked: “Who are you looking for? Son? He needs to be commemorated on a funeral service. We will conduct it and he will be found. And I take you to be my spiritual child.” And he added: “You will pray for me, and I will pray for you.”

When she returned home, a telegram was waiting for her, informing her that the body of her drowned son had been found.

Six months passed, and another son was killed by lightning. Shocked by grief, M. goes to Pechory to see her father. Just like the first time, he approached her himself. She said that it would be better for her to die than for her children. To this the father replied: “You will become a nun and will pray for them. And if you had died, then they, without praying for themselves, would not pray for you either.” When she became a nun, her sons appeared to her in a night dream, thanked her and said: “Mom, we are in a good place.”

Ни один из тех, кто ищет житейских приятностей, не может надеяться достигнуть внутреннего мира. Он даже не знает, что это такое.

Вот, опять же, приходит ко мне монах и говорит: «Отец такой-то тем-то и тем-то досаждает мне» и рассказывает свою сказку. Тогда я спрашиваю этого монаха: «Сколько лет ты уже в монастыре, отче?” – «Тридцать пять». – «Ты постоянно ходишь на ежедневные службы?» – «Ты же знаешь, что хожу”. – «Ты Писание читаешь?” – «Да». – «Тогда ты знаешь, что Господь сказал святому Петру о том, сколь много раз тот должен прощать согрешающему против него». – «И ты против меня”, – говорит он и уходит раздраженный. Такая вот чепуха!

В мире много старых людей, которые просто ходячие трупы, не думающие ни о чем, кроме своих удобств. Когда мы молоды или даже в среднем возрасте, мы можем скрывать нашу собственную истинную сущность. Старые же люди не могут этого делать. И часто раскрытие истинной сути личности ужасает».

About inner peace

So, again, a monk comes to me and says: "Father so and so annoys me" and tells his tale. Then I ask this monk: "How many years have you been in the monastery, father?" - "Thirty five". "Do you go to daily services all the time?" - "You know that I go." - "Do you read the Scripture?" - "Yes". “Then you know that the Lord told Saint Peter how many times he must forgive the one who sins against him.” “And you are against me,” he says, and leaves irritated. Such is nonsense!

There are many old people in the world who are just walking corpses, thinking of nothing but their comforts. When we are young or even in middle age, we can hide our own true identity. Old people cannot do this. And often the disclosure of the true essence of personality is terrifying. "
