Однажды пришел к старцу архимандрит. Ему был предложен епископский сан, но он решил отклонить это предложение. Тем не менее он хотел получить от старца одобрение такого своего решения. "Отче, — сказал он, — мне предложили епископство, но полагаю, что я неподходящая персона". — "Ну, отец архимандрит, если ваши начальники решили, что вы подходите, и призывают вас, то ваш прямой долг — подчиниться", — ответил старец. "Но, отче, — продолжал архимандрит, оправдываясь, — я чувствую себя недостойным такого поста. Кроме того, я предпочитаю мое настоящее положение". — "Это — не вопрос личных склонностей, отец архимандрит. Никто не может судить сам о себе. Начальствующие уверены, что вы подходите для предлагаемого места. Если они совершают ошибку, то ответственность — на них, а не на вас. Уж вы-то должны знать, что для монаха послушание выше молитвы и поста. Созерцательная жизнь часто служит вступлением к жизни апостольской — и наоборот". Но архимандрит отклонил совет старца и вернулся в свой монастырь. Однако он своевременно осознал свою ошибку, испытывая притом беспокойство и уныние. С раскаянием он вернулся к старцу. "Вам предложат другое епископство, — сказал старец, — и вы должны принять его. Эта новая епархия станет тяжким крестом для вас на многие годы. Вспомните, все те, кто отвергал свои кресты, получали другие — гораздо тяжелее"...»

One day, an archimandrite came to the elder. He had been offered the rank of bishop, but he had decided to decline. Nevertheless, he wanted the elder's approval of his decision. "Father," he said, "I have been offered to be a bishop, but I believe I am unsuitable." "Well, Father Archimandrite, if your superiors have decided that you are suitable and are calling you, then it is your duty to submit," the elder replied. "But, Father," the archimandrite continued, justifying himself, "I feel unworthy of such a post. Besides, I prefer my present position." "This is not a question of personal inclination, Father Archimandrite. No one can judge for themselves. Those in charge are confident that you are suitable for the position offered to you. If they make a mistake, the responsibility lies with them, not you. You of all people should know that for a monk, obedience is more important than prayer and fasting. The contemplative life often serves as an introduction to the apostolic life—and vice versa." But the archimandrite rejected the elder's advice and returned to his monastery. However, he realized his mistake in time, experiencing anxiety and despondency. With repentance, he returned to the elder. "You will be offered another time to be a bishop," the elder said, "and you must accept it. This new diocese will become a heavy cross for you for many years. Remember, all those who rejected their crosses received others—much heavier ones."
